Day 3 ended up being an exciting day. The day started off enjoying a warm sun on the deck with our morning coffee. Jeff, John, Mike, and Terran got in a decent downhill ski run in the late morning. As the guys returned, the ladies were about to set off for a local ski tour when an unexpected ski party showed up at the hut. Only at about 2pm in the afternoon did we discover we had Skinner Hut for 2 nights, not 3 as thought. A mad scramble ensued to pack up and get going. Amazingly, we were on the trail in only an hour but 3 pm is not a good time to start a hut transit. Fortunately, Betty Bear Hut was only 4 miles away and a minimal elevation gain of 800' in the first mile. We got to Hagerman pass in about an hour and the rest of the day was downhill to Betty Bear. Despite some slow going on the steep descent from the pass and Jeff's broken ski binding, we got to Betty Bear well before dark and were able to settle into the evening with a great meal and much laughing about our near disaster.
